The Sustainability Factor Concept

The Sustainability Factor concept has been introduced at Jumbo-Flamingo Shopping Centre. It will help Jumbo-Flamingo in becoming the most sustainable shopping centre in Finland by 2030.

The sustainability factor encompasses actions from the shopping centre itself, the stores operating there, and the customers, which, when combined, produce a multiplier effect greater than their individual contributions. These actions promote ecological and social sustainability. Even small actions can have a significant impact when a large number of people participate. The shopping centre has 170 shops, nearly 2,000 employees and almost 12 million visitors annually, providing endless opportunities for sustainable actions.

The sustainability factor reflects the combined efforts of stores, customers, local residents, and Jumbo-Flamingo’s own initiatives. These may be small, everyday choices, but together they create the largest sustainability factor in Finland. Every action matters, and each one contributes to increasing the sustainability factor.

While the sustainability factor is not a mathematically valid formula, its purpose is to express the limitless possibilities of collective action. The more people involved, and the more actions taken, the higher the factor grows.

One of Jumbo-Flamingo’s first sustainability actions is a community artwork commissioned from local artist Riika Anundi from Vantaa. The artwork is made from the old floor tiles that were replaced during Jumbo-Flamingo’s renovation, showcasing ecological sustainability. The artwork was created in community workshops where the old tiles were repurposed, highlighting social sustainability.

The artwork created by Anundi and the communities of Vantaa was revealed at Jumbo-Flamingo on the last day of the “Sustainability Currency” event, held from May 13 to 18, 2024. During the event week, themes of sustainability were prominently displayed in the shopping centre, including aspects of the circular economy.

Investing in recycling services has paid off

Collaborating with the tenants and Stena Recycling, who manages recycling and waste services at Jumbo, has proven effective — waste volumes have decreased, and recycling has improved.

After a year of cooperation, the results are starting to show. Although Jumbo’s sales have increased, waste volumes have reduced. Compared to the starting point of cooperation, the amount of mixed waste has decreased by over 40%, and the total waste volume has dropped by about 10%. The stores have been provided with information and assistance from recycling experts. Additionally, the functionality, cleanliness, guidance, and recycling opportunities at the waste collection and recycling areas have been enhanced.

Prisma’s Energy Efficiency Measures

During the renovations carried out in 2024, energy efficiency at Prisma has improved by about 10%. The store has implemented door-equipped refrigeration units and a cooling system that uses natural refrigerant (carbon dioxide). The new door-equipped refrigeration fixtures are more energy-efficient and help to maintain the correct temperature to ensure product safety, even during potential short power outages. Additionally, energy efficiency of Prisma has been enhanced through changes to lighting, ventilation, and heating systems.
